The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers to avoid purchasing or using Skin-Cap aerosol spray products due to the discovery of an undisclosed steroid. According to the agency, testing of Skin-Cap products revealed the presence of a high-potency glucocorticosteroid—an immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory steroid—hidden in the formulation. This steroid was not disclosed on the product’s label or packaging.

Skin-Cap products, including the Skin-Cap Skin/Scalp Treatment Spray, are marketed for the treatment of various skin conditions, such as:

  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Skin redness
  • Dandruff
  • Itching and irritation

These products are sold by Chemigroup France (formerly Cheminova Laboratories) through online platforms such as skincap.com, Amazon, and Walmart. They are commonly advertised as solutions for managing skin discomfort, but the presence of an undisclosed steroid raises significant safety concerns.

The FDA emphasizes the risks associated with the undisclosed steroid in these products. Topical corticosteroids like glucocorticosteroids, when used for prolonged periods, can cause a range of serious health issues. These include skin thinning (atrophy), allergic reactions, and potential systemic effects such as increased blood glucose, elevated blood pressure, bone damage, psychiatric issues, and adrenal dysfunction. This is especially concerning if the products are applied over large areas of the skin.

Consumers who have used Skin-Cap products are advised to immediately stop using them and consult a healthcare professional to assess the best course of action. Abruptly discontinuing the use of corticosteroids may also lead to adverse reactions, so professional guidance is essential.

At this time, the FDA has not been made aware of any adverse events related to the use of Skin-Cap products. However, the agency urges healthcare professionals and consumers to report any side effects or adverse reactions associated with these products. Reports can be submitted to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program either online or by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178.

Consumers are strongly advised to avoid using Skin-Cap products until further information is available, as the undisclosed steroid poses serious health risks, especially for those who use the products long-term.
