For the first time, one of Chanel’s five interpretations of N°5 departs from its iconic bottle. While the formula of N°5 L’Eau, created by in-house perfumer Olivier Polge in 2016, remains unchanged, the new oblong design of this collector’s edition bottle is a surprising shift. This stunning piece, paying homage to Marilyn Monroe’s famous quote, captures the essence of the Chanel legend while embracing the modernity of this olfactory variation.
Chanel unveils a limited edition redesign of the N°5 L’Eau bottle, drawing inspiration from Marilyn Monroe’s iconic 1952 interview with Life magazine. When asked what she wore to bed, Monroe famously replied, “A few drops of Chanel N°5.” This special edition bottle takes that statement to heart, with an oblong shape that mimics the fluidity of the fragrance itself, designed to feel like a second skin. The transparency of the bottle makes its material almost disappear, leaving only the essence of the perfume. Unlike the traditional flat-bottomed design, this limited edition bottle is convex, creating an organic shape that feels irresistible in the hand. Its tactile design invites interaction, offering a new sensory and emotional experience that remains true to Gabrielle Chanel’s minimalist aesthetic. This redesign introduces a fresh dimension to N°5 while maintaining the brand’s legacy of purity and elegance. Crafting this unique bottle came with several technical challenges. Its smooth, monolithic shape mirrors the design of N°5 L’Eau On Hand Cream, but its development required 18 months of collaboration between Chanel’s in-house teams and suppliers. Japanese glassmaker Koa Glass crafted the blown glass bottle, while Austrian supplier Technoglass produced the pressed glass cap. The bottle contains 15% recycled PCR glass, but the cap is made entirely of pure glass to meet technical standards. In addition to its striking design, the bottle evokes imagery of water, life, and fleeting moments. To accompany the launch, Chanel created an interactive experience on its website called “A Drop of Tomorrow.” This personalized experience allows users to explore their desires and emotions through keywords, tying into the fragrance’s theme of identity and destiny. The initiative highlights how Chanel unveils a limited edition redesign of the N°5 L’Eau bottle, continuing its tradition of linking the iconic perfume to personal expression and mystery.
