Shiseido’s Drunk Elephant has introduced its new “DrunkGPT” AI chatbot to improve customer engagement in China.

Yosano Masahiro, head of Solution Architect for Japan at Alibaba Cloud, commented, “We have seen growing demand from customers across sectors, especially in retail, exploring opportunities in the generative AI area.” He added that Alibaba Cloud is excited to offer its full stack of AI offerings, supporting brands like Drunk Elephant to capitalize on the AI trend.

As demand in China’s brick-and-mortar beauty retail spaces slows down, established brands are turning to e-commerce for enhanced engagement. “DrunkGPT” AI provides customized skincare recommendations and personalized shopping experiences in China through a mini-program on Drunk Elephant’s “Drunk Moment” page, where users can interact with the chatbot via text or voice input. Real-time responses are generated with the help of Alibaba Cloud’s speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies.

To ensure precise and relevant responses, DrunkGPT was trained on Drunk Elephant’s knowledge database and optimized using Alibaba Cloud’s advanced AI services, including Supervised Fine-tuning (SFT), Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), vector recall, and a multi-agent framework. This digital initiative will also be integrated with the brand’s offline launch events in China, aligning with their brand awareness campaigns.
