Change in skincare doesn’t happen overnight, and this is especially true for anti-aging products. Simply applying a cream one night won’t make you look ten years younger by morning, despite what the label claims.

To achieve your skincare goals—whether it’s clearer skin, increased hydration, or reduced wrinkles and dark spots—it’s important to be patient. Dermatologists recommend waiting at least a month to begin seeing changes, with a full three months needed to accurately assess a new routine’s effectiveness.

Dr. Melanie Palm, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, explains, “It takes about 30 days for the top layer of skin, the epidermis, to turn over. Using a product for at least three months allows for three cycles of epidermal turnover and potential biological effects on the dermis, the skin’s second layer.”

Dr. Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group in NYC adds that medicated products, including some acne treatments, also require several weeks to show results. “Medicated products need time to affect skin growth, even if they’re over-the-counter.”

Dr. Jennifer Chwalek recommends following a routine for 12 weeks or more to see significant improvements, particularly for fine lines or pigmentation. “While you might notice smoother, better-hydrated skin sooner, changes in fine lines and pigment often take longer.”

Moisturizers, on the other hand, can provide quicker results since they hydrate and repair the outer skin layer. Dr. Farber suggests choosing a moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin for faster effects.

Additionally, Dr. Chwalek advises ensuring that your products work well together, as layering multiple products may reduce their effectiveness. “Skincare products are often tested individually, so when layering, you might not get the full benefit of each ingredient if they don’t interact well.”

Consulting a dermatologist before adding new products can help avoid negative interactions with your existing routine. With consistent use and proper application, noticeable changes should appear in about three months.

As Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a board-certified dermatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, puts it, “Skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. It typically takes several weeks to see noticeable benefits.” It’s also important to have realistic expectations, as the best results often come from combining products with treatments like laser or injectables.
