Syensqo, a chemicals supplier, and Allozymes, a Singaporean start-up specializing in enzyme engineering, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop biosolutions for home and personal care products. The collaboration aims to leverage enzymes to create “cleaner and high-performing” ingredients, with a particular emphasis on skincare. Allozymes operates in the bio-engineering sector and features an ultra-high throughput microfluidics platform for engineering enzymes and microbes. This innovative platform allows for the “rapid and cost-effective” development of biomanufactured ingredients and bioprocesses.

“By combining Allozymes’ technological capabilities with Syensqo’s expertise in application and market access, we are set to create groundbreaking solutions that will not only enhance the home and personal care market but also foster a more sustainable future,” stated Thomas Canova, head of the Renewable Materials & Biotechnology growth platform at Syensqo.

The MOU represents a significant step in Syensqo’s strategy to quickly expand its portfolio of beauty specialty ingredients based on biotechnology. This partnership also builds on the company’s recent acquisition of JinYoung Bio, a South Korean ceramides specialist, last April. “Our partnership with Syensqo reflects our shared commitment to a sustainable future, using biotechnology to enable cleaner, greener processes. We aim to ensure that our actions today contribute to a healthier planet for generations to come. Together, we are establishing a new standard for environmental stewardship,” added Dr. Peyman Salehian, CEO and co-founder of Allozymes.

The initiative aims to scale enzymatic innovation, following recent developments such as Kao’s introduction of plant-based Neofloral Extracts, produced via an environmentally friendly cultivation method that “maximizes the utility of plant enzymes” to minimize impurities.

In the supplements sector, Cosmax Bio has launched a dietary supplement featuring “ultra-premium” gold enzyme-treated caviar powder extract aimed at improving skin health. Additionally, enzyme functionality is making strides in packaging innovation, as seen with L’Occitane en Provence’s Amande shower oil, which recently utilized a bottle made entirely from enzymatically recycled transparent PET.
