Concerns over the environmental persistence and potential toxicity of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have led to increased regulatory scrutiny worldwide. In response to these concerns, Croda Beauty has taken proactive steps to address the issue, highlighting its current PFAS-free peptides and pledging to eliminate all PFAS from its peptide offerings by 2026. Croda Beauty Emphasizes PFAS-Free Peptides, Pledges Full Portfolio Shift by 2026.

The company has committed to improving safety by removing substances such as TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) from its peptide manufacturing processes. TFA, a commonly used substance in peptide synthesis, is a member of the PFAS group known as ultrashort-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). TFA has been found to be particularly concerning due to its persistence in the environment and its potential for toxic effects.

Croda Beauty’s dedication to eliminating TFA from its peptide synthesis processes aligns with the company’s broader commitment to consumer safety and sustainability. The company is anticipating evolving regulations, ensuring its solutions remain both innovative and in line with the highest safety standards. TFA’s use in peptide manufacturing, particularly in the purification process via reversed-phase HPLC, has raised concerns due to its residual toxicity and undesirable effects, especially for peptides intended for clinical and preclinical studies. Studies have indicated that TFA may contribute to reproductive and liver toxicity, making its removal from manufacturing a key priority.

Croda Beauty has already transitioned several of its peptide products to be PFAS-free, including Biopeptide CL, Maxi-Lip, Bio-Bustyl PH, Matrixyl Synthe 6, Volulip, Silverfree, Biopeptide EL, Dermaxyl, Calmosensine, and Idealift. The company has pledged to expand its offerings and achieve a completely PFAS-free portfolio by the end of 2026, reflecting a strong commitment to safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

With the increasing awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with PFAS, Croda Beauty is taking a leadership role in developing cleaner, safer alternatives for the beauty and personal care industry.
