Lumene, a Certified B Corp, has introduced a new line of sustainable, bio-based 50 ml jars aimed at reducing the environmental impact of packaging. These vibrant monomaterial jars are fully recyclable as plastic.

The new jars are lighter and more compact than the previous 50 ml version, holding the same amount of moisturizer while using 44% less packaging material. Their carbon footprint is also up to 38% smaller compared to the former bio-based packaging.

Essi Arola, Head of R&D, Packaging and Sustainability at Lumene, stated, “Reducing the amount of packaging material is the most effective way to decrease the environmental impact of packaging. The 50 ml moisturizer jars are our most commonly used packaging format. Therefore, reducing the packaging material has a significant impact on the environment. The carbon footprint of the new jar, including its outer packaging, is 38 percent smaller compared to the previous bio-based jar we used.”

Lumene Launches Bio-Based Moisturizer Jars. The new bio-based jar is created from byproducts of the Finnish forest industry. Tall oil, a byproduct of pulp manufacturing, serves as the raw material for producing the bio-based feedstock used in plastic production. Because the jar utilizes side stream materials, no additional forest logging is necessary.

Arola further noted, “By 2025, our target is to have 80% of our plastic packaging made from recycled plastic or renewable raw materials.”

LUMENE is set to introduce a new line of bio-based moisturizer jars starting in August 2024. The jars are crafted from side-stream materials sourced from Finland’s forest industry, including tall oil, a byproduct of pulp manufacturing. This innovation supports LUMENE’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, as the jars are fully recyclable within the polypropylene (PP) stream and made without the need for additional logging.

This initiative is a collaboration with UPM Biofuels and SABIC, a biopolymer producer known for its certified renewable polymers. The bio-based solution follows a mass balance approach, ensuring a fully certified supply chain with ISCC Plus certification. LUMENE’s core range of moisturizers will be available in these new eco-friendly jars, and the transition to the new packaging will not affect product pricing.
