Vitamin C treatment increased a protein marker called Ki-67. This protein is only found in actively dividing, healthy skin cells.

This biochemical process requires iron in its reduced Fe2+ state. However, oxidation converts Fe2+ into Fe3+, stopping DNA demethylation.

Vitamin C donates electrons to recycle Fe3+ back to Fe2+. Therefore, it keeps TET enzymes functioning and regeneration processes active.

The researchers found over 10,000 sites of reduced DNA methylation. They also noted a major increase in 12 key growth genes.

When TET enzymes were blocked, skin improvements reversed. This confirmed that vitamin C depends on TET activity for its effects.
