Amika has issued a voluntary recall of its Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo due to concerns that some production batches may have been contaminated with the bacterium P. gergoviae. The recall affects all sizes and lots of the shampoo purchased in 2023 and 2024, but does not include the conditioner or any other Amika products.
The recall was prompted by feedback from customers reporting a change in odor and, in rare cases, temporary irritation. Although no serious adverse health events have been reported, Amika discovered that various batches from its third-party manufacturing site did not meet the company’s stringent quality standards. The presence or potential presence of P. gergoviae in the affected products was the cause of concern.

Amika clarified in a statement that while the contamination does not pose a serious health risk to healthy individuals, the bacterium could lead to changes in odor and, in some cases, temporary irritation. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) also confirmed that P. gergoviae can cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those undergoing surgical procedures. Although infections are rare, P. gergoviae has been linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and even sepsis.
The recall notice was issued on January 6, and affected products were sold by major retailers, including TK Maxx, Sephora, and Cult Beauty. Amika advised customers to immediately stop using the product, even if it appears to be unaffected by changes in odor or quality.
In response to the recall, Amika assured customers that after consulting an independent toxicology group, they are confident the product does not pose a serious health or safety risk to healthy individuals. However, the company is taking the precautionary step of removing the affected lots from circulation and encourages all customers who purchased the shampoo to discontinue use and seek a refund.
